Son of Emperor Charles V, he is given the Seventeen Provinces by Rhine River (low countries) in 1555. Ruled Spain beginning in 1556. Opposed Protestantism like Charles V. Enacted decrees of Council of Trent to be enacted against Protestants in provinces.
Beggars petitioned this and were given the title "beggars."
