The Khmer Empire is historians refer to as the period of time from the 9th to 15th century when Cambodia was an Islamic/Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. At the height of its power, it controlled most, of not all of Southeast Asia, stretching from the tip of the Indochinese Peninsula northward to modern Yunnan province, China, and from Vietnam westward to Burma.

After the Khmer refused to recognize Thai authority, the Thai besieged Angkor and sacked the capital city of Angkor, signaling an end to the Khmer Empire.
