The Cold War was a nearly 50 year long period of rivalry and tension between the US and the Soviet Union. The US and the USSR (Soviet Union) had been allies in WWII, but the US was suspicious about communism and the Soviets resented the US for not helping them sooner in WWII. The rivalry scared many people as both countries raced to stockpile nuclear weapons. The threat of real war seemed close several times. But in the end, because of economic problems, the Soviet Union collapsed, which ended the Cold War.
