Throughout the epidemic, Italy and its separate provinces had very strict rules regarding plague victims and people who could have been exposed to the disease. In Florence, entry was forbidden to the sick. In Pistoia, people who visited a place where the black death was rampant were not allowed back into the country. No linen or corpses were allowed to be brought through the city.
