Principal photography began on March 8, 2012.

Production began 28 February but Johnny was not there for the first week as he was seen in LA.

Filming locations extended throughout six states over 7 months: Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and California.

Some filming occurred specifically:
- Creede, Colorado, in June 2012
- Moab, Utah, in July 2012;
- Cimarron Canyon State Park, New Mexico in August.

Throughout this time Johnny had time-off between locations and between scenes where he was not required on set.

Second unit (stunt and blue screen) work commenced in late September 2012 in the parking lot of Santa Anita Racetrack, Arcadia, California.
