A very large empire, practiced Sunni Islam. However, pop. realized that a centralized govt. could not serve the interests of everybody. Taken over by Mamluks in ~850, ultimately falling under control of mountain warriors from Daylam in 945. Retained caliph only to keep control of sunni popultaion
