The Persian Wars, also known as the Greco-Persian Wars were a string of two invasions by the Achaemenid Empire onto mainland Greece. Specifically, there were many significant battles during this time. Sardis, which was burned down by the Greeks in 498 B.C. Marathon in 490 B.C, which was the first invasion of Greece. Thermopylae in 480 B.C, which was the second invasion of Greece and ended in the Persian occupation of Athens. Salamis in 480 B.C, where the Greeks decisively beat the Persians in a naval attack. And lastly Plataea in 479, where the Greeks ended the second Persian invasion.
