They created the conference hoping to solve the problems in Asia. All the World powers met to discuss battle between Vietnamese nationalist force and the French. When America rejected to directly take part in the war, France pulled the plug and signed the Geneva Agreements.

This made France withdraw their troops from northern Vietnam and they created a temporary border until the Vietnam elections. This also meant that no foreign troops could enter Vietnam. The United States did not sign the agreement because they thought the elections would lead to a buildup of communism. To prevent this, the United States helped establish a new anti-communist government in South Vietnam and became more involved in Vietnam.
