The Boxer Debacle (Rebellion) (1 jan 1900 ano – 1 jan 1900 ano)

Descrição:

- After a famine in 1897-1898 the boxers attacked foreign mission 1898-1899
- They then went into the treaty port cities and tried to fight there
- They then marched to Beijing to protect the emperor (1900)
- Became a national movement in Northern China
- Attacked the foreign legation in Beijing

- Empress Dowager (then in charge) threw support behind the boxers

- eight nation alliance crushed the rebellion
- The allied nations occupied Beijing, into the forbidden city
- They then rounded up and killed the boxers

The Southern provincial governments banded together and defied the central order from Beijing to go to war against the foreigners. Thus the south was largely left alone

The Boxer Indemnity
- 450 million tales of silver to be paid over course of 39 years
- Emptied Chinese government vault overnight and left them in debt until 1949

- Qing government returned in 1902 after running to Xi'an
