- Nurhaci (1599-) the great khan of the Manchus (people from Manchuria in the North) funded the rise of the Qing Dynasty
- Founded by minority manchu group
- Was a multi ethnic and multi-linguistic empire that was blessed by a string of highly competent leaders
- the Qing dynasty added Manchuria, Tibet,
Xinjian, Inner Mongolia (expanded to rooster)
- The Qing dynasty made the canton system which only allowed foreign traders to trade through Canton.
- Foreign traders weren't happy that the vast Chinse market was only open through this crack
- The British sent an Emissary (George Macartney) asking the Qianlong emperor to open up more trading spots
