At the time, urban life had many strains and downsides for parents that were raising their children but isolating them from their extended family. This led to divorce rates increasing drastically in the 19 hundreds and also a number of State legislatures starting to build upon the grounds of divorce to include cruelty and desertion. an added consequence of the rural to Urban shift receipt at the time was a drastic reduction and family size. on farms children were a valuable asset to labor so it encouraged many farmers to have multiple kids. as people move towards the cities it became not economically viable to raise many kids.
