The annexation of Texas by the US caused diplomatic issues between the US and México. President Polk decided to send an envoy, John Slidell, to settle the Texas-México border disagreement and try to convince México to sell their New México and California territories to the US. México refused to sell these territories, and they argued that the southern border of Texas was along the Nueces River, however, Polk claimed that the border laid along the lines of the Rio Grande. President Polk decided to send General Zachary Taylor and his army to the Rio Grande line, which was across the land that México had claimed. In retaliation, the Mexican army crossed the Rio Grande, captured a US army patrol, and in the process killed 11 of those men. Polk considered this an act of war, and he decided to use this incident as leverage for his war message to Congress. The war resolution was then approved with a majority vote in both houses, even though a large number of northern Whigs opposed this war.
