Fighting In The Civil War (1 jan 1 ano – 1 jan 1861 ano)
Descrição:
White abolitionists serving as Union officers in the South organized former slaves into units like the First South Carolina Volunteers in 1863. Also, the Massachusetts Fifty fourth recruited African Americans from across the North including Frederick Douglass's three sons. By the end of the war approximately 200,000 African Americans fought in the Union Army and 37,000 died.
Despite their sacrifices on behalf of the U.S., African American soldiers still had to face racism. For example, black soldiers were paid less than white soldiers.
