Stalin strikes a pact with the Germans after the Western powers refused to form an anti-Hitler alliance. This pact with Germany encouraged the Germans to attack Poland and begin WWII. While Germany was occupied in the West, Russia annexed Eastern Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and parts of Romania. He also took advantage of his might to extort territories into granting him land and attacked Finland.

Stalin appoints himself as Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars in 1941 in recognition of the threat of Hitler. He appointed himself Supreme Commander in Chief following the unprovoked Blitzkrieg into Russia in 1941 and stayed in Moscow to arrange a counteroffensive in the Winter of 1941. In the Winter of 1942, the Russians won at the Battle of Stalingrad and at the Battle of Kursk in the Summer of 1943.
