In Dred Scott v Sandford, the Supreme Court had made a ruling that African Americans could not be American citizens (free or not). They also made a ruling that Congress had lacked the power to ban slavery. This Supreme Court ruling had completely angered the abolitionists which kept furthering the connection between the north and south.
