President Jackson's willingness to use military force to wage war on Indians and forcibly remove them from their lands and resettle them in the West dramatically increased Executive power. He established the precedent of using military force on U.S. soil to enforce laws by defeating the Seminoles in the Second Seminole War (1835-1842) and using the military to force the Cherokee off their land in the Cherokee Trail of Tears that resulted in thousand of Indian deaths.
