Whigs and Northern Democrats supported the position that all African Americans, enslaved or not, should not be a part of the Mexican Succession and supported the Wilmot Proviso. Many northerners didn’t oppose slavery in the South but abolitionists didn’t support slavery anywhere. Northerners wanted the West to have opportunities for whites instead of competing with slaves for labor. The Free Soil Party was created by Northerners who opposed allowing slavery in the new land. They advocated for homestead and internal improvements.
