Amid scientific discoveries, religious leaders sought to renew American spirituality. it was rooted less in established churches and educated ministers than in new religious organizations and popular preachers. It transformed Protestant churches and the social fabric of northern life. New religions like Mormonism were established and Transcendentalism prposed that individuals look inside themselves and to nature for spiritual and moral quidance rather than religion.
