The battle was the last military action in the Vicksburg campaign. The Siege of Vicksburg was an important victory for the Union as it gave them the Mississippi river. However, the South was divided because of their loss of the Mississippi River. It also cemented Ulysses S. Grant's reputation as a military leader.
