The Marshall Plan began Europe's economic recovery following WW2, and was essential to preserve the collapsing social and political conditions in West Europe. When Communism and left wing labor parties threatened to push out more conservative groups, the Marshall Plan stabilized the hostile climate and provided resources for the starving people.
