The Indian Act was brought in to control and eliminate the First Peoples culture and expected that they would assimilate, or take on the culture of the Europeans. It did not include the Metis or Inuit First People.
Indian was any person of male blood, and passed through the male bloodline.
An Indian man could marry a non-status woman and keep his status. Women marrying a status indian man would gain status rights, so would their children.
Women could not participate in the band system, could not possess marital property and if she left or divorced him, she could not stay in the home.
