P. 41 Murray book: When I discovered my father’s practice in Houston, I telephoned to introduce myself. A woman answered and asked who was calling. I simply told her “it’s a relative from Trinidad.” When my father came on the phone, I asked: “Are you Rawle Andrews from Grenada?” “Yes.” “I am so sorry to bother you, sir, but my name is Conrad Murray. I am the first child and only son of Milta Murray and I was told by her that you are supposed to be my father.” I had played that sentence over in my mind dozens of times. I had decided not to say, “You are my father” or to ask, “where have you been, you bastard,” because I fretted that being too direct. I didn’t want to lock him in, to make him feel uncomfortable. I wanted him to make a decision under no pressure whatsoever. I basically gave him a way out, but he did not take it. “Yes I know your mother,” my father said calmly, not even missing a beat. “Well, I am traveling to the U.S. for the first time on May 30, 1978, and I would like to include Houston as a stop so I would be very happy to introduce myself.” “That would be very nice.”

When I arrived in Houston, […] We stood there awkwardly. I couldn’t just go into his arms. He should have been the one to make the move. Instead we gave each other a stiff handshake. When we spoke that night one of the things he asked was what I wanted to do with my life. I told him I wanted to become a doctor. “All things are possible,” he said. “One never knows what the future holds.” Shortly before my father left that night, he turned sharply towards me and said, “I want you to know that whatever happens, I will never deny you."
