He discovered the specific charge of the electron.

He devised an experiment that would allow him to calculate the magnitude of the electrical charge in an electron. He sprayed droplets of oil into a chamber with two electrical plates, and they would become charged by x-ray ionized air. He then adjusted the voltage between the two plates to exert an electrical force of equal magnitude to the gravity acting upon the drops to keep them suspended.
