- North Kora forced across the 38th parallel and attacked South Korea
- Seoul was captured within 3 days
- 16 nations sent troops, the USA sent 250,000 and the other sent a total of 40,000
- September 1950 - The South Korean troops and aid launched a successful landing at Incheon
- North Korean troops pushed back to the parallel in 2 weeks, coalition forces kept pushing
- Mao warned that if S. Korean troops crossed the Yalu river China would attack
- October 1950 - 200,000 Chinese crossed the Yalu river back to the 38th parallel
- January 1951 - Fighting reached a stalemate at the 38th parallel
- July 1953 - Armistice was signed

- 4m died, including 54k US marines
- Millions of homes destroyed
- US established SEATO (increasing mistrust)
- US increased defence budget by 40%
- Military bases established in NATO countries
- Red army enlistment doubled between 1950 and 1956
