The Jazz Age came out of the Harlem Renaissance. Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are responsible for creating the swing and blue notes, call and response vocals, polyrhythms and improvisation. Jazz’s roots come from West African cultural and musical expression, which helped define a “new” history for African Americans.
