After the Kansas-Nebraska Act established that slavery in new territories would be based on popular sovereignty many northern abolitionists and southern slave owners moved to Kansas.Literal fighting between abolitionists and slave owners led the formation of a new political party.Northern Whigs and Democrats joined with the Free Soil Party (opposed expansion of slavery) and the liberty party (abolitionists) to create a new super party: The Republican Party
