The United States purchased the French assets in the canal zone for $40 million after the French failed to construct the Canal in the 1880s. A treaty was proposed by the Columbians about the rights to build in what was considered a Colombian territory. However, it was rejected and the US threw its military power behind a Panamanian independence movement, which eventually led to negotiating a deal with the new government. Eventually, they were given the rights to the canal zone. It took over ten long years to finish the project, and on August 15, 1914, the Panama Canal was open.
