Persian Wars (1 jan 499 ano antes da era comum – 1 jan 479 ano antes da era comum)
Descrição:
A war between the Persians and the Greek poleis. in 499 BCE Greeks living in Ionia unsuccessfully rebelled against the Persians. The Athenians provided half-hearted help and the Persians retaliated against them, only to suffer a surprising loss in 490 BCE by Athenian hoplites at the battle of Marathon.
In 480 BCE the Persian king Xerxes I personally led a massive invasion of Greece. This common enemy caused many poleis to bundle their forces and fight against the invaders. The first confrontations took place at Thermopylae, where a much larger Persian force was held off by a small Greek army in a narrow pass. Only after a local man showed how it was possible to attack the Greek army from both sides, did it fell. This made way for the Persian army which continued to Athens and sacked it.
While a battle was going on land, a naval battle took place at the same time. Off the coast of Boeotia, in Artemisium, neither side could claim a clear victory. Persian ships were wrecked by storms which gave the Greeks a fighting chance. Only a month later, the Greek fleet met the Persian armada at Salamis, an island of the coast of Athens, and won a decisive victory. The remnants of the Persian fleet retired and the Greeks finally overwhelmed the Persians at Platea in 479 BCE and drove out the Persians.
The war provided a brief glimpse of what Greek poleis could accomplish if they worked together. By defeating the Persians, the Greeks ensured that they would not be ruled by a foreign power, which meant that the Greek political forms and intellectual concepts were not lost and could be handed down to later generations.
