A high protective tariff (or tax) was signed into a law by the U.S government. South Carolina - specifically John C. Calhoun strongly disagreed with high tariffs and felt that they targeted the South unfairly. South Carolina nullified the federal law , calling it unconstituitional until a "force bill was threatned which would bring the nation army into the state to make sure law was followed. A compromise took place. South Colroina would pay the tax is the U.S government lowed the tax. The U.S Government would not send troops if South Caolina agreeded to pay this lower tax.
