Teddy Roosevelt assumed presidency at just 42 years old in 1901 when president William McKinley was assassinated. As a president, he was very popular and somewhat well known as a rough rider from the Spanish American War just a few years earlier. He was well known for his interest in preserving the environment and his work trying to slow down the growth of trusts that had come to control much of the US economy at the time. He was also very interested in making sure that there was federal regulation in the US, such as passing the Interstate Commerce Act and the Elkins Act. He also took interest in public health and passed things like the Pure Food and Drug Act which called for truth in labelling. Finally, in the area of civil rights, he was not the best at protecting the rights of all African Americans, but he did support a few people specifically that caused some social change.
