The American Civil War was fought between the United States and the Confederate States. The Confederate States were made up of eleven southern states that left the Union in 1860 and 1861. They left the Union in order to protect the institution of slavery. The war ended with the Union Victory and the Confederate states being reinstated into the U.S.
