Summary: As Allied troops pushed eastward into the German heartland, Soviet troops were the first to come upon one of the Nazi death camps, Majdanek. Majdanek was the first of many death camps that was liberated. The SS guards worked hard to bury and burn all evidence of their hideous crimes as the Soviets approached.
Significance: The liberation of the death camps was extremely significant because it meant freedom for thousands of prisoners. These liberations also helped lead to the final and long waited ending of World War II.
