Palestrina was an Italian composer of sacred music. He came of age as a musician under the music of Du Fay and Josquin, who were northern European influences. He held musically prestigious positions in various Catholic churches across Italy during his lifetime. Palestrina left behind a plethora of music of various genres, such as his having composed both secular and sacred madrigals.
He composed "polyphony of utter purity", with melodies resembling plainchant in their stepwise motion, cambiata (delaying and encircling the resolution), and aiming to make words intelligible. His polyphony was used as a model for following generations.
