He was a franco-flemish composer of primarily secular music. He was quite popular, as reprints of his compositions continued for a century following his death. As one of the earliest madrigal composers, his publications popularized the madrigal outside of Italy. He composed hundreds of madrigals, usually for four voices. Like Verdelot, his madrigals were relatively simple compared to later developments. He quite equally balanced homophony and imitative polyphony, remaining structured and diatonic. The text painting and chromaticism did not appear until later madrigals. He lived in both Italy and France during his lifetime.
