He was a franco-flemish composer. Born an illegitimate child (between a priest and unmarried woman), though this did not seem to impact his future schooling. During his education, du Fay was quite popular with the papal authorities and quickly made a place for himself amidst cathedral staff and various institutions. He moved frequently (mainly between Cambrai and Savoy), thus also changing his positions quite frequently. He excelled in every genre, wrote sacred music in various styles, and thus well represents the international style of the 1400s.
