A French company ultimately began building the canal in 1881, but they later left the project due to money issues. Later in 1901 an American company took it over. It is a canal that is 48 miles long that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. It was built to shorten the distance around South America, and today connects 160 countries around the world. It took many people to construct it, at one time there could be as many as 40,000 people working on it and they were all from different countries. The canal runs South and then to the East. The canal consists of three different locks that help move the ships. Since the canal was built, the U.S has had control, but in 1999 Panama gained sole control of the waterway.
