Conflict over control of Korea, spurred by Japanese expansionism. The Qing navy surprisingly lost to Japan. In the Treaty of Shimonoseki, the Qing lost and ceded Taiwan and the Liodong Peninsula, which had a major impact on Qing prestige. The loss further highlighted the empire's lack of technological development even when compared to their former inferior to the east. This loss was one more significant point of resentment for Chinese nationalists at home and abroad. It helped lead to the Hundred Days' Reforms, which sought to reproduce the Meiji Restoration's achievements in the Qing.
