In 1488, Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias became the first European mariner to round the southern tip of Africa, opening the way for a sea route from Europe to Asia. He was born in 1450 and died in 1500. Rounding the southern tip of Africa was a huge step for exploration and trade opportunities.
