The Black Lives Matter movement is led by an organization whose goal is to affirm that black people and their contributions to society are important and to protect black communities against violence and oppression. It started as a hashtag on Twitter (#BlackLivesMatter) in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman after he killed Trayvon Martin. Some view it as a modern Civil Rights Movement like how it was in the 1950's and 60's.
