New imperialism was a desire for expansion. Many countries wanted to expand during this time. Almost all of Africa and some of Asia were conquered. Many of the newly colonized countries gained independence shortly after world war 2. In the first wave of colonization, Europe conquered some of the Americas and also conquered Somalia.
