Freedom Summer (1 jun 1964 ano – 1 ago 1964 ano)
Descrição:
Freedom Summer was a large scale civil rights campaign in Mississippi where volunteers attempted to register as many African American voters as possible. This was done due to the newly ratified 24th Amendment. Although over 17,000 African Americans registered to vote, only around 1,600 completed applications were accepted by local registrars. This highlighted the need for federal voting rights legislation and created momentum for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
