Of German descent, born Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst.
- Strengthened her power as a despotic monarch
- Gained lands in Poland after the partitions of Poland
- Gained wide access to the Black Sea after wars with the Ottoman Empire
- Had many lovers
- She posed as an 'enlightened despot'. However, in reality she adeptly navigated the world of court intrigues and was a deft manipulator, skilled in the art of deception.
- She did reform the education system though
