Cuba rebelled against its imperialist occupiers and wanted America to aid them. However, current president McKinley would not. Newspapers began publishing "yellow journalism" in an attempt to draw us into the conflict. On February 15, 1898 USS Maine explodes and 250 Americans are killed. On April 11, America goes to war with Spain. The outcome of this was the land aquired, Cuba, Philippines, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Guam. It was described as a "splendid little war" by John Hay.
