The US Civil War broke out in 1861 from a long standing controversy over slavery between northern and southern states. The election of Abraham Lincoln, a supporter of abolition even though he wasn't one, caused seven states, starting with South Carolina, to succeed and form the Confederate States of America. Later four more states joined them. Famous battles include Bull Run, Antietam, and Gettysburg. The war ended with the surrender of the Confederates in 1865.
