He lost his chance of becoming a HRE to Charles V Habsburg, which became a cause for many wars between France and the Habsburgs.

Turned France into a powerful state with strong central authority.

Under his rule, France evolved into a consolidated nation state. Latin was being slowly superseded by French in official documentation.
