Charles V (HRE) (1 jan 1530 ano – 1 jan 1558 ano)
Descrição:
During his rule, his dominion was called "The empire on which the sun never sets".
He thought of himself as the moral and political leader of (Catholic) Christianity, appointed to defend it from Muslims and Protestants.
Charles V wanted to unite Europe under his rule as the emperor - and was strongly opposed in this quest by France and England.
Waging wars on too many fronts - Ottoman Turkey, Protestants, France - turned out to be too much of a financial burden. With a sense of defeat, Charles V abdicated in 1556 to spend the rest of his life in a monastery.
Prior to abdicating, he divided the empire between his brother Ferdinand I HRE (Eastern, German part) and his son Philip II of Spain (Spain and the Netherlands with colonies).
