In August of 1942, the US Marines launched a surprise attack at the Japanese troops in the Solomon islands, in which the US Marines took control of an air base under construction. At the end of the battle, the Japanese were outnumbered. Strategy wise, possessing the Guadalcanal air base was important (this enables control over the sea lines of communication between Australia and the United States/US). Also, the Battle of Guadalcanal was the first major offensive and a decisive victory for for the Allies in the Pacific theater.
