Chinese involvement in the Korean War (1 jan 1950 ano – 31 dez 1953 ano)
Descrição:
- North Korea invades South Korea
- Mao initially intended for troops, resources and labour to be used for the Reunification Campaigns
- Mao was hesitant to commit his resources to the war, but China entered the war because of the threat the US posed at China's border should they win
- China ended up committing large amounts of troops (3,000,000 "volunteer" troops, actually conscripts) and resources in aiding North Korea
Harmful results of the war, on China:
- Large number of Chinese casualties (1,000,000)
- US pledged its defence of Taiwan and Nationalist China
- Drain for China's economy. Industrial resources diverted towards the war effort.
- Material and monetary assistance from the USSR had to be payed back in full, which annoyed the Chinese greatly
Beneficial results of the war, on China:
- Call for national unity to fight this war successfully strengthened CCP control
- Increased Mao's popularity, as China matched the US in combat for 3 years
- Provided justification for increasing political and social pressure
