Throughout his presidency, he took a non-alignment stance in the Cold War, and worked for peace and unity throughout Southern Africa. He was imprisoned for his involvement with the Zambian African National Congress, eventually becoming the first president of independent Zambia. He was an outspoken supporter of the anti-apartheid movement and opposed white minority rule in Southern Rhodesia. He served as the key African leader regarding the conflicts in Angola, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), and Namibia.
