The Battle took place in the Midway islands, claimed by the United States. The battle was fought almost completely in the air by the United States, and Japan. Japan targeted the island because it was an important naval base for the United States, and would be crucial to their plans in the Central Pacific, it would also severe supply lines from the United States and Australia. In the end, Japanese forces were forced to retire.
